Design Challenge
The app’s first version had powerful features and promising results, but the interface didn’t capture users’ attention. With the photo editing market becoming increasingly crowded, our challenge was clear: design a cleaner, more engaging UI that would stand out, draw users in, and keep them coming back.

The Process
🔎 1. Define
The original design struggled with inconsistency: uneven spacing and typography weakened the brand and overall UI. This made the app feel less polished and less trustworthy, highlighting the need for a cleaner, more cohesive visual experience for users.
📊 2. Competitive Analysis
I analyzed popular apps like Facetune, Picsart, VSCO, and Airbrush to see how they presented their features in simple, user-friendly ways. I also studied mobile user habits and design best practices for small screens. By combining these insights, I identified opportunities to make MEMS more intuitive, engaging, and accessible.
💡3. Ideate
The goal was to design a UI that felt intuitive and welcoming, not complicated or intimidating. By updating typography, refreshing brand colours, and creating a cohesive design system, we brought focus to what mattered most and guided users seamlessly through the app.
🎨 4. User Flows
I mapped out user flows for the key features of MEMS, streamlining the UI to highlight the app’s full potential. Working closely with the developer, we identified what was feasible, spotted gaps, and reinforced what worked, creating a smoother, more efficient design process.
🔄 5. Design → Review → Revise → Repeat
Alongside the developer and marketing manager, I led the full design and marketing cycle for each new feature. From defining features and designing icons to mapping user flows, refining the UI, and creating marketing assets like Google Ads, iOS in-app events, and video content, I ensured the app stayed consistent, engaging, and efficient.

After the second iteration launched, MEMS experienced a rise in App Store downloads and Instagram followers. Users highlighted how the redesigned UI made the app easier to use and the overall experience more enjoyable.
Note: Skylab Technologies was acquired by ImageQuix in 2024, who decided to focus on their desktop app and discontinue MEMS.
Outcomes
Rebuilding this app taught me that simple is often better - An interface can be intuitive and familiar while still feeling unique through thoughtful branding. I also learned the value of flexibility, knowing when to adapt and reprioritize ideas to focus on what’s truly feasible and impactful.
